QS Nyakiongora is an accomplished quantity surveyor and construction manager. He joined the ministry of public works in 1981 after graduating from the university of Nairobi with an honors degree (B.A Building Economics) and rose through the ranks becoming Chief Quantity Surveyor in 2008. He was in the pioneer class of 2001 who joined the University of Nairobi for M. A (Construction Management) graduating in 2005.In 2013 he was promoted to be Works Secretary in the ministry of Public works. This was the highest position in the technical line of the ministry as the head of all technical departments.
In 2015 he retired on attaining the retirement age. However, the government decided to retain him and was appointed the Secretary of the National Building Inspectorate and chairman of the Multi-sectoral Agency Consultative Committee on Unsafe Structures (M.S.A.C.C) which was mandated to inspect and Audit all buildings for safety to forestall rampant collapsing of buildings and other structures. He did a sterling job and was later appointed Advisor, Construction and Built Environment, Nairobi Metropolitan Services. He has a wealth of experience in construction.
QS Nyakiongora has a wide exposure to international construction practices and safety of the built environment having been trained, attended seminars and presented papers in many countries. His first paper in an international forum was in the year 2000 when he presented a paper on construction contract administration in Kenya in Calgary, Canada which was organized and hosted by the America Association of Consulting Engineers (AACE) and the International Cost Engineering Council (ICEC).
During the masters course in 2004 the class was sponsored to Germany for two weeks to get experience of the construction and rehabilitation of the stadia in preparation for the World cup of 2006
He has attended short trainings on disaster risk mitigation and preparedness in Colombia, Kenya and Japan. He was also trained in Emergency Planning at the Emergency Planning College Yorkshire in the UK in 2018.
He has supervised many Government projects in Kenyan Embassies and Missions abroad which included but not limited to Tanzania, South Africa,Nigeria, Namibia, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Japan among others.
He is a founder member of the Institute of Quantity Surveyors of Kenya and served as the chairman for eight years. He is also a founder member of the Institution of Construction Project Managers of Kenya (ICPMK). He has served as a member of BORAQS and also as a council member of Moi University.
